AUCTION33 :: Saturday October 20th

Last year we went with Jenny Woo to her friend Madeleine's birthday auction. All her friends, strong representatives of the creative class, donated their work. We'd atteneded benefit auctions before, with starting bids higher than our monthly rent. At Madeleine's auction we got to be "high rollers" and actually bid on things we'd want anyway AND it was going to a good cause. Rad. And Tim thought, "Great idea! I'm going to steal it! I've got more artsy fartsy friends than I could shake a paint brush at."

And so it began. This year Tim is turning 33 on the 24th of October. Instead of having the usual Birthday shenanigans, which will most likely happen anyway, like water going down hill, Tim is hosting his own birthday auction...so join us this Saturday, October 20th @ 8PM!

Koga drug us to the library one day to hear the author of Kabul Beauty School speak about her book and the trials and tribulations of living and working in Afganistan. This gregarious hair dresser from Michigan managed to build and maintain a school for women in Kabul in one of the only occupations available to them and one of the only situations they aren't under sever patriarchal scrutiny - beauty salons. The Kabul Beauty school has graduated several classes, often making the graduates the sole breadwinners for their families. It's a great cause and in constant need due to the unstable situation there.

We wanted some of the money going to someone abroad who is doing something amazing with their two feet on the ground, and hands in the dirt. Hence the Rabour Village Project. The RVP is a Seattle based non-profit organization. The president of RVP, Loyce Mbewa is currently a student at the University of Washington.The main program areas of the organization are:

Orphan Support - Education and development of children who have lost one or both parents to HIV/AIDS
Clean Water Ensuring access to clean water
Income Generation - Empowering women through financial independence
Community Health - Supporting local solutions to community health issues such as home-based care, community health workers, food growing and nutrition education, and peer education.
